How Is Crawler Undercarriage Load Capacity Calculated, and Why Do Tonnages Not Match?

Load capacity of a crawler undercarriage is set by frame stiffness, track rollers, shoe strength and pin shear. Explains the three tonnage conventions and how to match machine weight.

Load capacity emerges from frame stiffness, roller specification, track shoe strength and pin shear capacity rather than a single tonnage figure. Mismatches usually come from different labelling conventions: gross machine weight covers the total machine the chassis can carry, allowable total load refers to mass permitted above the chassis, and per-track rating averages the two assemblies. Always establish which convention a supplier quotes against, or you will systematically under-size. As a workable rule the allowable total load should be at least 1.2 to 1.3 times the machine's maximum loaded weight, and that factor rises for climbing or continuous operation at high temperature.
